Fabrizio Romano says Liverpool could go for ‘world class’ midfielder in 2025

Liverpool have been looking for a new holding midfield player for 12 months now.

Fabinho hasn’t been replaced at Anfield, and while Wataru Endo did come in last summer, it’s fair to say that the Japan international isn’t a long-term solution for Liverpool.

Liverpool have been scouring the market for a new defensive midfielder for a while, and this summer, it looked as though they’d found their man.

Martin Zubimendi was strongly linked to Liverpool, but, ultimately, the Spaniard decided to stay at Real Sociedad.

However, speaking on Men in Blazers, Fabrizio Romano has claimed that Zubimendi could be an option for Liverpool again in January, stating that the Reds won’t go for another number six before deadline day.

Liverpool could go back for Martin Zubimendi

Romano shared what he knows about the ‘’ midfielder.

“I would be surprised if they can find a number six at the level of Zubimendi in the final two or three days. They prefer to wait and try again for Zubimendi or another player in that position at another moment of the market, maybe in January, maybe next summer, but now, the focus is on other positions.”

Martin Zubimendi deal will never be easy

Liverpool could go in for Zubimendi in January, but a deal will still be difficult.

The Spaniard has been fiercely loyal to Real Sociedad, and that doesn’t look like changing.

Indeed, according to Steve Kay, Zubimendi doesn’t care about playing for a big club.

According to people I’ve been talking to he’s a strange man, he’s a strange character,” Kay said.

“He’s someone who doesn’t care about playing for teams like Liverpool, Man Utd and Arsenal. He’s happy to play where he is, finish fourth, fifth or sixth. He loves where he lives and that’s him. The Matt Le Tissier of La Liga I suppose.”

At the moment, Zubimendi has no plans to leave Real Sociedad, and it’s hard to see that changing over the next few months.
