Fabrizio Romano says Liverpool are constantly thinking about signing £53m player

Liverpool had a very quiet summer transfer window.

The Reds only made two signings in the summer, and neither of those players have made an impact just yet.

Liverpool summer signingsFee
Federico Chiesa£10m
Giorgi Mamardashvili£35m

Federico Chiesa has spent almost the entirety of this season on the sidelines, while Giorgi Mamardashvili has been out on loan back at Valencia.

However, if the Reds had things their way, they would have been a bit busier in the summer.

Indeed, Liverpool were chasing a new holding midfield in the summer in the shape of Martin Zubimendi.

Liverpool were very keen on Zubimendi in the summer, but Zubimendi ended up rejecting the Reds.

Speaking on his YouTube channel, Fabrizio Romano has shared an update on Zubimendi’s situation, and he says that Liverpool are still very interested in the midfielder.

Liverpool very interested in Martin Zubimendi

According to Romano, Liverpool are still very keen on Zubimendi.

The journalist says that Liverpool are constantly monitoring this situation with a view to purchasing the player in the near future.

“On Zubimendi, you remember that last summer Liverpool were very aggressive on that one. They were close to making the deal happen but then it idnd’t happen because the player decided against moving from Real Sociedad,” Romano said.

“What I wanted to tell you today is that Liverpool on a constant basis are monitoring Martin Zubimendi and it’s also true there are two managers that are big fans of Zubimendi aside from Arne Slot at Liverpool. That is Mikel Arteta also appreciates Zubimendi, and also Xabi Alonso.”

Why Martin Zubimendi might not leave Real Sociedad

Liverpool are constantly surveying this situation, but signing Zubimendi won’t be easy.

Zubimendi rejected Liverpool in the summer for a reason, and that’s because he’s incredibly settled in San Sebastian.

Indeed, according to Steve Kay, Zubimendi doesn’t care about playing for a big club.

“According to people I’ve been talking to he’s a strange man, he’s a strange character,” Kay said.

“He’s someone who doesn’t care about playing for teams like Liverpool, Man Utd and Arsenal. He’s happy to play where he is, finish fourth, fifth or sixth. He loves where he lives and that’s him. The Matt Le Tissier of La Liga I suppose,” Kay said.

Zubimendi may well want to see his career out at Real Sociedad, and when a player has that level of loyalty to his local team, it’s hard to persuade them to move on.

This may not be an easy deal for the Reds to broker.
