Fabrizio Romano says Chelsea now have plans to make January signing, but on one condition

Fabrizio Romano has said Chelsea have plans to sign a centre-back this month, but only if Trevoh Chalobah is sold.

The 24-year-old defender has been rumoured with an exit from Stamford Bridge for quite some time, with the likes of Bayern Munich and Tottenham both linked with Chalobah.

With both clubs already signing centre-backs this January, though, there’s a good chance that neither side will look to bring in Chalobah in the coming weeks.

Yet according to Romano , Chelsea are hopeful that they can move on Chalobah in an attempt to bring in another defender of their own.

Whilst a centre-forward is Chelsea’s main objective for the January window, a centre-back is also heavily on Mauricio Pochettino’s mind as a crucial addition this month.

Romano said: “I keep hearing that Chelsea are also keeping a close eye on the centre-back market because Trevoh Chalobah could leave the club in the next few days, so keep and eye on Chalobah out and a potential new centre-back in, if not now, then in the summer.”

With injury preventing Chalobah from playing even a single minute of football for Chelsea this season, the odds of the Blues offloading the versatile defender feel slim at best.

Indeed, whilst there has been historic and current interest in Chalobah, the defender’s lack of playing time in recent months could struggle to bring in a legitimate offer.

As a result, Chelsea could really struggle to sell Chalobah, with the centre-back’s injury problems likely to cause some major issues in any potential exit from west London this January.
