Fabrizio Romano says Benfica want ‘something crazy’ for Liverpool target Enzo Fernandez

Liverpool have been heavily linked with a move to sign Benfica star Enzo Fernandez, and Fabrizio Romano has now shared the latest.

It’s no secret at all that the Reds are on the lookout for a new midfielder in 2023. Jude Bellingham is the man who has been in the news, but following Argentina’s incredible World Cup campaign, young Fernandez has also been linked with a move to Anfield.

A deal, however, will not be cheap.

Fabrizio Romano says Benfica want ‘something crazy’ for Liverpool target Enzo Fernandez

A number of young players from different countries performed brilliantly at the World Cup in Qatar, but Fernandez was definitely among the very best.

The 21-year-old only had three caps for Argentina before the World Cup began – all of them were substitute appearances in friendlies earlier this year.

Many fans were keen to see how Fernandez would fare, but very few expected him to steal the show and end up winning the Best Young Player of the tournament award.

Portuguese outlet  revealed this week that Liverpool saw an £88 million bid rejected by Benfica for Fernandez. Romano has now claimed that they are looking for crazy money to let him go.

He told : “Benfica are not open to letting Fernandez go in January – they want something crazy. Also, he has a release clause of €120 million (£106.2m).

“They want Enzo Fernandez and Goncalo Ramos to be part of the squad for the second half of the season in the Champions League after winning the group.”

It’s understandable why Benfica are demanding crazy money for Fernandez.

The talented midfielder only joined the Águias last summer. He signed a five-year deal following his move from River Plate – over four-and-a-half years of which are still remaining.

To add to that, the £106.2 million release clause inserted in his contract provides Benfica added protection in potential transfer negotiations with Liverpool and other interested clubs.

It’s definitely not beyond the Reds to break the bank for a talented player they believe will transform their team. Whether it will be the ‘spectacular‘ Fernandez or Bellingham someone else remains to be seen.
