Fabrizio Romano says Arsenal didn’t go for Matheus Cunha because of who they could sign in summer
Arsenal had a very quiet winter transfer window.
Indeed, the Gunners didn’t sign a single player in January, but, it was🌊n’t for the lack of trying.
Arsenal made a bid for Ollie Watkins late in the window, while Arsenal also made an approach for Evan Ferguson at one point.
Arsenal were also interested in Matheus Cunha at one stage, but noth🍸ing ever came to fruit🦄ion on that front.
Speaking on his YouTube channel, Fabrizio Romano has been discussing Cunha’s situation, and he says that Arsenal didn’t go for Cunha because they wanted to save their money and s𝕴ign a proper number nine in the summer transfer window.

Why Arsenal didn’t go for Mathues Cunha
Rom༺ano sa💮id that Arsenal do have a strong interest in Cunha and he’s really appreciated internally at Arsenal.
However, Arsenal didn’t go ꦇfor the Brazilian because they wanted to keep their powder dry heading into the summer🍰 where they plan to spend big on a striker.
“Matheus Cunha the Brazilian star of Wolves is doing very🐼 well this season,” Romano said.
“He is on the list of several clubs, we know that Arsenal have had Matheus Cunha on their list for a long time, appreciated internally, a player that th🔯ey really like, but they wanted to save a big amount of money for a different kind of player, a p⛎roper number nine in the summer.
“Arsenal’s interest was there🐈, but it was never something they were prepared to do in the January transfer window.”
Why Arsenal may now regret not signing Matheus Cunha
Arsenal🎶 ultimately didn’t sign Matheus Cunha in the winter transfer window, but they may now already be regrett♋ing that decision.
Indeed, for most of the winter window, Arsenal probably thought they were fairly well-stocked in the attack, but they’ve recently been struck by something o🍨f an injury crisis.
Arsenal attacking injuries | Duration |
Gabriel Martinelli | One month |
Gabriel Jesus | Rest of the season |
Bukayo Saka | Three months |
As things stand, Arsenal’s only rea🐼l attacking options are Ethan Nwaneri, Raheem Sterling, Kai Havertz and Leandro Tr🐼ossard.
There’s a serious lack of depth there, and, in a lot of ways, a lack of quality too – Sterling hasn’t s🅘cored a league goal all season, and📖 Nwaneri
Cunha would’ve been a great antidote to Arsenal’s current attacking problems, but, Arsenal were thinking long𝓀-term and, in turn, have decided to not go for Cunha.
If Arsenal hav🍎e a trick up their sleeve waiting for the summer, this🦹 could work out well in the end, but it has to be said that signing Cunha would’ve boosted their immediate chances of success this season.
