Fabrizio Romano claims £22m Spurs midfield target now having a medical at London rivals

Tottenham Hotspur have been linked with Adam Wharton in recent weeks.

However, it now looks as though Spurs are set to miss out on the Blackburn midfielder – to a London rival, no less.

Tottenham hit the ground running in the January transfer window by landing Timo Werner and Radu Dragusin early on in the month.

A new midfielder was reportedly on the cards for Spurs, and links duly emerged linking them with the likes of Conor Gallagher and Wharton.

In November, reported that Tottenham are one of several Premier League clubs in pursuit of the Blackburn midfielder.

As well as Spurs, fellow Premier League Londoners Crystal Palace have been linked with the 19-year-old talent.

And now, according to Fabrizio Romano, it looks as though the Eagles will be pipping Tottenham to Wharton’s services.

The transfer insider, taking to on Tuesday afternoon, said Palace are closing in on the player, with a medical booked for the same day, as per BBC Lancashire’s Andy Bayes.

Romano also said “Here we go soon,” with the player set for a move “in excess of £20million”.

Romano went on to claim that Palace had struck a £22million deal over Wharton, and that the player is now in London for his medical ahead of a move in the next 24 hours.

Tottenham set to miss out on Adam Wharton signing

In recent years, Tottenham have done well in signing talented prospects with a view to becoming future first-team stars, such as Pape Matar Sarr, Destiny Udogie and Ashley Phillips.

Wharton fits in that category. At just 19 years of age, he has already clocked up over 50 competitive appearances for Blackburn, and looks like he has a great future ahead of him.

However, Spurs’ interest appears to have been more along the ‘keeping tabs’ level, as opposed to Palace, who have moved in and entered into discussions with Blackburn and Wharton.

Barring a dramatic late turn of events, it looks as though Tottenham are going to miss out on the talented player, and looking long-term, signing players from Palace isn’t particularly easy.
