‘Extraordinary’ midfielder could now sign for Ajax despite Arsenal making contact just days ago
Arsenal might be trying to push some deals along in the market this summer but one potential target could now be set for a move to the Eredivisie instead.
The Gunners are close to signing Riccardo Calafiori after he flew into London to complete his medical and the formalities of his deal with the club.
The signing of Calafiori will feel like a relief for the Arsenal fans, who have seen plenty of links but little in terms of action in the market this summer.
Reports have also suggested that Spanish midfielder Mikel Merino is high on Arsenal’s list as they continue to build.
However, another Spanish midfielder, Sergi Roberto, has also been contacted by Arsenal ahead of him leaving Barcelona this summer.
But while Arsenal have apparently made that approach, it looks like Roberto could end up joining Ajax.

Sergi Roberto could move to Ajax after being approached by Arsenal
to share news on the situation with Roberto and his next move, Fabrizio Romano has said that Dutch giants Ajax are very much in the picture for the ‘extraordinary’ midfielder.
Lauded in as an ‘extraordinary’ midfield player, Roberto has been a key figure at Barcelona for years now.
The experienced Spaniard has made nigh on 400 appearances for the Catalan club and will very much be leaving as a fan favourite and a man in-demand.
Of course, Arsenal have admired Roberto for some time now and while an approach came just last week, their interest goes back to last year.
Quite how much can be read into the reports of Arsenal making their move, is open to interepretation.
But on a free, Roberto could well bring experience and knowhow to a young group.
It’s clear that’s why Ajax like the idea of signing him and it’s certainly one for Arsenal to consider as they days tumble on towards the deadline.
