Experienced Vida would be perfect to improve Fulham’s appalling defensive record

Fulham are keen on Croatian international Domagoj Vida of Beşiktaş to bolster their defence during the January transfer window, according to a

Claudio Ranieri’s side picked up their first clean sheet of the season against fellow strugglers Newcastle on Saturday, but it’s clear that their defensive work still needs a lot of improvement in the second half of the season if they are to secure another season in the Premier League.

Vida enjoyed a strong World Cup as Croatia beat the odds to make the final and his experience and ruggedness is something Fulham simply don’t have right now.

When Ranieri guided Leicester to that historic Premier League triumph, he had two limited but physical defenders in Wes Morgan and Robert Huth at the back, and Vida is in the same mould but is a better player.

Vida does lack a yard of pace but if Ranieri is planning to have his side play on the counter attack – and the early signs are that he will – he would be perfect.

Ranieri is in need of a defensive leader and although there would be a period of adaptation, Vida has the experience and quality to make an instant impact.
