Exclusive: Nigel Martyn thinks Dean Henderson would be a good signing for Leeds United
Nigel Martyn has told The Boot Room that he believes Manchester United goalkeeper Dean Henderson would be a good signing for Leeds United in January – but feels a move is harsh on Illan Meslier, and would spell the end for Kiko Casilla.
Henderson, 23, is looking for a loan move ahead of the January window in order to cement his ticket to Euro 2021 with England. He has managed just three games for Manchester United, since returning from two years on loan at Sheffield United.
Bournemouth, Brighton and Leeds are keen – though the Cherries are hardly likely to win the tussle, given they are in the Championship. Henderson signed a five-year deal with United this season, worth £100,000 a week ().
While Martyn feels Henderson would be a good addition, Leeds icon Martyn thinks a loan would be pointless and a permanent option or an outright buy is the better move. He also feels for Meslier, and such a deal would be worrying for Casilla.
“He would be a good signing, given how well he played for Sheffield United,” Martyn told The Boot Room. “It would be harsh on Meslier, but he’s only 20. He’s one for the future. I’d like a more senior goalkeeper, but there is no reason to change it.
“If they go after Henderson, it’s worrying for Casilla. It means he is not turning to him, and if you’re trying to get Henderson on loan – it needs to be with a view to buying it. If Man United don’t want to sell, you’re upsetting your goalkeeping department.

Even if Henderson does not sign, Casilla’s future at Elland Road is bleak. One of the club’s highest earners, any kind of half-decent offer for the Spain international is likely to see the veteran stopper move to pastures news.
Some reports have claimed that there has been interest from Spain in his services, but we are yet to find out where his future will be. Meanwhile, Meslier will be downheartened.
He has been near-perfect, his only mistake coming when allowing Helder Costa’s deflection go in against Palace. He does not deserve to be replaced and if Leeds are to sign players in January, a goalkeeper is hardly a necessity.
