Exclusive: 75% of West Ham fans want Dimitri Payet to be sold this month

In our exclusive poll, The Boot Room has found that 75% of West Ham United fans want Dimitri Payet to be sold as soon as possible.

The news comes after rumours emerge that the club has turned down a £19.5 million move for the playmaker from his former club Marseille, but co-chairman David Sullivan has spoken to insist that he will not allow the French international to depart the club this month as he :

“All we ask now is that he shows the same level of commitment to West Ham United as the club and the fans have shown to him by honouring his contract.”

That would involve the 29-year-old seeing out the remaining four and a half years of his contract on a staggering £125,000 per week, which seems ludicrous for all parties involved given how big a chunk of the club’s wage budget that is.

On Saturday, when the Hammers hosted former manager Sam Allardyce and Crystal Palace whilst a security guard was stationed by a picture of Payet on the outer side of the London Stadium, with fans heard chanting songs criticising the Frenchman for his behaviour in demanding a move and videos emerging of fans wiping their feet and spitting on a Payet shirt.

It now seems that Marseille could make a renewed bid for the free kick specialist, with the  claiming that club chiefs are heading to London to tie up a deal, even if that must involve Payet remaining in London for the rest of the season and then making the move at the end of the season.

Our poll would suggest that Irons fans would happily see him depart this month for the right fee, with the club holding out for £40 million, but that prospect seems increasingly unlikely.
