Ex-Newcastle record signing Michael Owen has reservations over Almiron

Michael Owen has aired his opinions about the man who smashed his long-standing club transfer record at Newcastle United, Miguel Almiron.

The Magpies finally splashed the cash in a big way last month with the £20 million acquisition of the Paraguay international from Atlanta United ().

Almiron was being chased by the Toon Army for most of January and even before, and fans were elated to see his signing finally confirmed on deadline day.

Big things are expected of him now, after starring for Atlanta and inspuring them to the MLS Cup with his 13 goals and 11 assists.

The hype is certainly there amongst the fans, but former striker Owen has questioned the South American’s suitability to the Premier League.

Owen on Almiron

: “He’s been successful in the American league, [it’s] whether that can translate is the big question.

“He doesn’t look like a huge physical presence, he’s more technical and we just hope in the Premier League with the pace and the physical aspect of the game he still manages to show his ability because he’s certainly got a lot of it.

“Yes, it will enhance [the attack], it will be more quality up front but will they go and score 60 goals a season? I think that’s a bit presumptuous.”

Owen has a point. Almiron may take some time to adapt to the Premier League as he settles in at his new club.

Newcastle fans must be patient, especially since the player has actually not played for a couple of months and will surely lack match fitness.

That said, there are plenty of players similar in stature to Almiron who are flourishing in England’s top flight.
