Ex-Liverpool youngster Edvard Tagseth delivers verdict on Rhys Williams
Former Liverpool youth prospect Edvard Tagseth believes Rhys Williams is destined to become a top player.
Williams’ name is starting to do the rounds, with Virgil van Dijk out of the first-team picture for the foreseeable after sustaining an ACL injury.
On Tuesday, Fabinho left the action early against Midtjylland after picking up a hamstring issue, with Williams sent on top replace the Brazilian after just half an hour.
There hasn’t yet been an official update on the Brazilian, but there have been claims he could miss the club’s next three games.
Joe Gomez is currently Liverpool’s only fit senior central defender, leading to suggestions youngster Williams may be in line for some involvement in Jurgen Klopp’s first-team over the next few weeks.
There will be many Liverpool fans who don’t know all that much about Williams, but one man who knows him quite well is Tagseth – now of Norwegian outfit Rosenborg – who used to play with him.
He said (): “When I see Rhys coming on [in the Champions League], I miss my friends and the coaches, but I’m happy I left.
“I had the Ajax game on in the background and I heard there was a sub coming on, so I watched the telly and it was Rhys standing there! It was amazing and he won some headers there as well. It was just like seeing him in the U18s!
“At U18s and when he played up with the U23s when I was there, he was always dominant with his physicality, and he is very good on the ball as well. I always thought he would become a top, top player.”

Liverpool have had great success with bringing through young players in recent times.
Trent Alexander-Arnold has become a household name, while Curtis Jones is now regular name in the first-team.
With Liverpool crying out for defensive cover, perhaps Williams will become the next starlet off the coveyor belt of talent.
