Ex-Everton winger Henry Onyekuru sets up former Leicester striker Islam Slimani in Monaco draw
Two ex-Premier League players combined to make an immediate impression at their new club. Henry Onyekuru left Everton this summer and he set up ex-Leicester City man Islam Slimani for Monaco’s opener.
With 39 minutes on the clock, Slimani put Monaco ahead and Onyekuru provided the assist. Wissam Ben Yedder made it 2-0 before half-time but Monaco ended the game with 10 men and drew 2-2 with Nimes.
Despite the disappointing result for Leonardo Jardim’s men, their summer recruitment is already paying off. Onyekuru and Slimani both struggled in England for different reasons but have made a fast start to life in France.
TBR’s view: Outcasts for different reasons
Onyekuru’s problem centred around work permit issues. The Nigerian striker was loaned out to Belgium and Turkey while Everton tried to sort out a visa. But, eventually, they gave up and let the 22-year-old secure a permanent move to Monaco.
It is a shame that Onyekuru was not able to showcase his ability for Everton. He impressed at Galatasaray last season and has the ingredients to be a threat on the wing or up front. But a work permit did not look likely, unfortunately.
He was later joined by Slimani. The 31-year-old became Leicester’s club-record signing in the summer following their Premier League win. But he has only scored 13 goals since his 2016 switch and is out of favour under Brendan Rodgers.
The Algeria striker is only on loan at Monaco so his Leicester career is not entirely over yet. But despite his debut goal for Monaco, age is no longer on his side and time is running out for him to save his Leicester career.
