Ex-Arsenal chief was ‘astounded’ by what club were offering former Emirates hero in 2018 transfer
Former Arsenal transfer negotiator Dick Law has said that he couldn’t believe how much Manchester United offered Alexis Sanchez when the attacker moved in 2018.
, the Gunners’ ex-transfer chief revealed that he couldn’t get over the finances the Reds Devils were putting up for the now-Inter Milan forward.
Sanchez moved to United whilst Henrikh Mkhitaryan came the other way in a blockbuster swap-deal.
As per Der Spiegel via the Athletic, Sanchez earned an astonishing £391,000-a-week after tax with United. Making him, at the time, the highest-paid player in the Premier League.
Mkhitaryan, meanwhile, earned £144,000-a-week following his move to the Gunners.
Law said about the figures: “We were astounded when we heard what United paid the player and paid the agent.”
Whilst the money involved with the deal was eye-watering, Sanchez’s time at United was a bona fide disaster.
The Chilean attacker, who was and still is beloved by the Emirates Stadium faithful, scored just five goals in two seasons for the Manchester giants.
The transfer was so bad that United tore up Sanchez’s contract in 2020. The winger signed for Inter on a permanent deal.
Indeed, the 2018 winter deal was a calamitous example of the riskiness of swap deals in the Premier League.
And the transfer might have been avoided entirely had things played out differently. Arsenal received a £60m transfer offer from Manchester City for Sanchez in the previous summer, as per the Athletic.
