‘Every time’: Tottenham’s Harry Kane makes claim about Newcastle’s Nick Pope after his big mistake for England

Newcastle United goalkeeper Nick Pope made a handling mistake to allow Germany to snatch a 3-3 draw with England at Wembley last night.

Gareth Southgate’s men had roared back from 2-0 down into a 3-2 lead, with captain Harry Kane scoring the penalty which put the Three Lions in front.

But with only minutes remaining, Pope spilled a shot and Kai Havertz prodded home to puncture England’s momentum.

It was a bad moment for Pope, who has had a good season and Kane came out and defended him in his post-match interview, as per .

Kane reacts to Pope mistake vs Germany

Speaking about Pope as well as Manchester United captain Harry Maguire, who made mistakes which led to the first two Germany goals, Kane said: “For sure, any individual mistake you’re going to be gutted.

“But we’re a team and you get behind each other, they learn from it and move on.

“They have been great for us every time they have put an England shirt on.”

Jordan Pickford was injured for this international break and that gave Pope a chance to stake his claim to be England number one.

It is the harsh reality of life as a goalkeeper, and especially one at international level, that one mistake shapes the perception of his whole international break.

Pope and Aaron Ramsdale remain behind Pickford in the pecking order – however unpopular that is on Tyneside – with no more games until the World Cup starts in November.
