Do Everton’s youngsters have hope under Marcel Brands after guiding England to Toulon glory?
England won the Toulon Festival for the third year running this weekend, defeating Mexico in the final. It was a great achievement for the side, who had entered a strong team and were tipped as favourites from the start of the competition.
The win in the final was also great viewing for any Everton fans. Three of the starting XI in the tie are on the books at Finch Farm. Kieran Dowell, who scored the winner, right-back Jonjoe Kenny and Callum Connolly, who was only called into the squad late to replace the injured Ovie Ejaria, all started the game.
It was yet another fine example of the brilliant young players Everton have coming through the ranks. With Fraser Hornby leading the line for semi-finalists Scotland, this Toulon tournament has perhaps been best represented by Everton players.
But what next for this great batch of young stars, as Everton face mass change?
Everton have huge investment opportunities now with Farhad Moshiri at the club. New faces are bound to arrive under the guidance of new manager Marco Silva and director of football Marcel Brands.
Where once Everton had to rely on their young talent, the funds are now there for the club to simply buy rather than nurture.
But it would be an incredible shame if Everton went that way. The final in Toulon this weekend showed just how talented some of the Everton youngsters are. The one positive to take is that Brands, as a director, has a history for backing young talent. His first days at the club were spent with David Unsworth and the youth system and rightly so.
Hopefully, there is room for the young ones because, as the song says, why wait for tomorrow. Everton should be ready to give their young ones a chance in the near future.
