Everton: Witsel latest; Stoke City star in demand; Polish wonderkid linked
It is being today that Everton have had a £25 million bid accepted for Zenit St. Petersburg midfielder Axel Witsel.
The Belgian international is one of new manager Ronald Koeman’s main targets this summer and if reports are to be believed, then he is one step closer to getting his man, after the Russian club allowed the Toffees to discuss personal terms with the player.
Chelsea and Inter Milan are also interested in the 27-year-old, but Everton look to have stolen a march in the race for the player. Witsel began his career at Standard Liege and spent a season at Benfica prior to joining Zenit in 2012.
A move to one of Europe’s biggest leagues looks to be the next logical step for the man who has played 71 times for his country. He appears to have informed his current side of his desire to leave, with Zenit boss Mircea Lucescu admitting as much this week, “he has spoken with the club and he has asked to leave. He has two offers from Italy and two from England”.
If Witsel was to make the move to Goodison Park, then he would offer Everton a real physical presence in the middle of the park. With Garry Barry now past his best, a top class defensive midfielder is required and Witsel would certainly be an improvement on some of the current options in that position.
Meanwhile, are reporting that Everton are interested in 19-year-old Polish midfielder Bartosz Kapustka.
The youngster; who plays for Cracovia in his homeland, was named in his Poland’s Euro 2016 squad and has already been capped 11 times despite his tender age. He came to the attention of British audience after an impressive performance in his country’s 1-0 victory over Northern Ireland last month, when Gary Lineker described him as “deliciously talented”.
Leicester City, Ajax and Southampton are also apparently interested in the player so Koeman will have to pull out all the stops in order to sign the highly-rated youngster.
Finally, the Sunday People is reporting that Stoke City’s as he looks to improve his attacking options.
The 27-year-old was crucial for the Potters last season, scoring 12 times, but with his current contract running out at the end of next season, Mark Hughes may look to cash in on his star man. It is believed that Stoke are keen to extend the Austrian’s contract but with a number of clubs monitoring the situation, it is possible that Arnautovic will be tempted away from the club.
Paris Saint-Germain were linked with the forward in January, but a move to Merseyside would be a very interesting one. Arnautovic has developed into one of the most entertaining players in the Premier League under Mark Hughes and the time may now be right to test himself at a bigger club.
