Everton urged to hire Duncan Ferguson as new manager to replace Carlo Ancelotti
Daniel Amokachi has urged Farhad Moshiri to hire Duncan Ferguson as the new Everton manager to replace Carlo Ancelotti.
The former Toffees striker has taken to to call for his former teammate to be given the job. Ancelotti has forced Moshiri to look for a new manager after walking away after just 18-months to re-join Real Madrid.
Ancelotti praised Ferguson during the Italian’s spell at Goodison Park for helping to improve the spirit of the team. He also lauded his former right-hand man for his ability to get players to play with confidence ().
Ferguson is now in the running to go from assistant manager to the head coach (). He also believes he is ready for the main gig but faces competition from Nuno Espirito Santo and David Moyes. Applicants also flooded the inbox of Director of Football Marcel Brands.
Amokachi has hinted Brands and Moshiri would be wasting their time, however. Instead, he believes the right man is already under their nose in the passionate and popular Ferguson.
“Stop looking far, Everton, the Big Dunc is already on the bench,” Amokachi . “He was [the] understudy under [a] few top-class managers in the last decade at the club. He has the club at heart. We all saw the passion he shares with the players and fans whenever given the opportunity.”
TBR’s view: Ferguson a risk as new Everton manager
Moshiri and the decision-makers at Everton are open to appointing a coach with no previous Premier League experience. But choosing to hire Ferguson to replace Ancelotti would be a risk.
The former Toffees striker did a great job as the interim manager following Marco Silva’s sacking. But it is another matter to have the role full time. Other than in December 2019 before Ancelotti’s arrival, the 49-year-old has also not had a head coaching position.
Moshiri and Brand would be able to look at the performances Everton produced under Ferguson in 2019 positively, though. The players responded magnificently from Silva’s exit to beat Chelsea, were resilient at Manchester United and solid against Arsenal.
Having the job would mean the world to Ferguson, as well, as the emotion was clear in a steely-eyed man () when given the chance. But the futures of players like Richarlison and James Rodriguez are on the line (). So, Everton may have to be safe when naming their next manager.
