Everton talent Kieran Dowell sends Marco Silva a message with sensational international display

England’s under-21s were in fine form yesterday as they put Denmark to the sword in a friendly clash. Aidy Boothroyd’s men romped to a 5-1 victory and Everton fans would have enjoyed watching the game. The immediate name that pops out is Dominic Calvert-Lewin. He scored two goals in the game. However, he was not the star Everton performer.

That accolade belongs to Kieran Dowell.

Operating in a midfield trio with Lewis Cook and Phil Foden he helped tear Denmark to shreds at will. He delivered a wonderful cross for Dominic Solanke’s first goal and it was his sliding pass to Reiss Nelson that created the space for Calvert-Lewin’s first goal.

It was a sensational playmaker display alongside, in Foden and Cook, two sensational young midfielders.

It was a performance that must have Marco Silva paying attention.

This summer, the Portuguese boss decided he wanted to keep hold of Dowell to see if he could break into the Everton first-team. A recent poor display v Southampton in the EFL Cup appeared to have ended hopes of a breakthrough this term.

However, his international performances will have Dowell floating on air coming back to Finch Farm. With Gylfi Sigurdsson and Andre Gomes both struggling with injuries over the international break, it might have come at the perfect time for the 21-year-old.
