Everton should offload midfielder James McCarthy in the summer

Everton midfielder James McCarthy has been frozen out at Goodison Park this season and he should be shown the exit doors in the summer.

The 28-year-old missed the first half of the campaign through injury, but manager Marco Silva has opted against bringing him back into the team since he became available again in January.

He’s been named on the bench several times for the Merseyside club, but is without an appearance all season and it’s hard to imagine him having a future under Silva.

Everton signed the Republic of Ireland international for £13million () back in 2013 and he was initially a big success under Roberto Martinez.

He was a no-nonsense central midfielder that broke up play well and provided immense energy to the team.

But the midfielder’s absence in recent months suggests that Silva clearly doesn’t fancy using him and moving him on seems the best move for all parties.

McCarthy is still under contract with the Toffees until 2020, which is why they should try make some money on his sale and try tempt another English club into his signature.

His bad luck with injuries and the competition for places in Everton’s midfield is a clear sign that he should leave, despite putting in some impressive performances for the club.
