Everton see what they’re missing as Joe Gelhardt shines for England under-17s
Everton were one of three teams in the Premier League interested in the signature of Joe Gelhardt this summer. , the Toffees, along with Manchester United and Liverpool, were keen on the player back in June.
The reasons why were clear. The talented striker is considered one of England’s top striking prospects. All three clubs would have felt they could convince the youngster to turn his back on Wigan Athletic and head elsewhere.
Everton would have been an excellent location for the youngster but Gelhardt has stuck with Wigan, perhaps in the hope of some first-team action this season.

In the end, he signed a new deal with Wigan, putting an end to those rumours. He signed a contract extension until 2021 to remain at the DW Stadium.
He has featured for the first-team this season. Gelhardt played 12 minutes in the club’s EFL Cup defeat to Rotherham United.
But it was his recent form for the England under-17s that has caught the eye. He scored the third goal in a 3-1 win over the USA a week ago before bagging two against Russia in a 3-0 win. He did not score, but featured, as England made it three wins from three with a 3-1 win over Brazil.
Gelhardt looks a top talent and at only 16-years-old could have been a future star for Everton. But they should certainly keep tabs on the player’s career going forward.
