Everton round-up: Barkley breaks silence; transfer saga to resume in January; 25-man squad named
🥃One of the biggest and most baffling stories to come out of Transfer Deadline Day was Chelsea’s failed bid to land Everton midfielder Ross Barkley. According to the , the England international turned down the chance to join the Premier League champions following a medical, with no official bid coming from another interested party, Tottenham Hotspur.
𒅌The source, coming from the newspaper’s football correspondent Matt Law, claims that Chelsea and Everton agreed a £35 million deal for Barkley and that a medical was duly conducted. However, the Toffees academy graduate then informed the Blues that he wished to wait until January in order to fully consider his options. Barkley has recently undergone surgery on a hamstring problem and is set for three months on the sidelines.
⛄The article claims that Everton majority shareholder Farhad Moshiri was ‘annoyed’ at the revelation of the deal falling through, since the club will now risk losing the player on a free next summer without compensation, or be forced to sell for a cut-price fee in January, expected to be a mere fraction of the £35million deal agreed with Chelsea, let alone the club’s initial valuation.
Moshiri who was quizzed on the Barkley situation on the night, is quoted as saying: “The two clubs agreed a deal of £35m, I think personal terms were agreed and after the medical we heard from Paul Martin, his agent, that he (Barkley) had changed his mind.
“He wants to reconsider his position during the January window. He is currently injured, so I think technically he will be with us because he is under contract for another year. It is a big surprise, but that is football.”

꧂Barkley’s claims are the latest twist in what has become one of the summer’s standout transfer sagas, and the word at the is that it will resume once again in January, with both Chelsea and Tottenham set to re-enter the market in pursuit of the player, the former clearly not put off by Barkley’s failure to agree a deadline day move.
ꦿThe source also claims that the blame behind Oumar Niasse’s failed £7 million move to Crystal Palace fell at the feet of agent fees, after the Selhurst Park club refused to shell out a six-figure fee for the player’s representatives.
