Everton reportedly set to keep Holgate at Goodison to bolster centre back options

Everton want to keep promising defender Mason Holgate around Goodison Park next season to replenish their central defensive options,

They that following the departure of Phil Jagielka and Kurt Zouma’s return to Chelsea, Marco Silva is a little light at the heart of his defence, with only Michael Keane and Yerry Mina to call upon.

That means that after his loan spell at West Brom in the second part of last season – where he played on the right of defence – Holgate is to be retained around the first team.

The defender, who earns £25,000 a week , has shown promise for a while and Silva will hope that the spell with the Baggies has brought his game along another level.

The Toffees have a good academy and using younger players to fill gaps in the squad is cost-effective and ensures a stronger connection with the supporters.

Holgate has the ability to kick on this season and perhaps even make the most of England’s relative lack of central defenders and push into Gareth Southgate’s plans.

Jagielka leaving has opened the door for Holgate, now the onus is on him to take the chance if he is indeed Everton’s third-choice central defender next term.
