Everton playmaker Gylfi Sigurdsson comments on Tottenham Hotspur

of Everton’s FA Cup win over Tottenham Hotspur that he has “love” for the North London club, after he helped Everton beat his old side 5-4 after extra-time in a stunning clash on Wednesday night.

Sigurdsson, 31, produced a masterclass on Wednesday night as Everton came from going 1-0 down in the third minute – to score five goals and earn a place in the last eight of the FA Cup. The Icelandic star scored from the penalty spot.

It was his fifth goal of the season, but Sigurdsson proved even more important in terms of creativity. He laid on three assists, for Dom Calvert-Lewin’s goal and Richarlison’s second – as well as a delightful chip for Bernard to score the winner.

Sigurdsson, who has 78 caps for his country, spent two seasons at Spurs between 2012 and 2014 – scoring 13 and creating nine more in 83 league and cup appearances. Asked about his old club, he admitted he has love for the North London side.

“Always special for me to play Tottenham, I love the club, love the players and staff here and it’s nice to see everyone here again. But most importantly we’re still in the competition,” Sigurdsson said, when quizzed about Jose Mourinho’s team.

TBR’s view – Back in the 10 role, Sigurdsson is doing what he does best

Everton brought in James Rodriguez in the summer and it meant ex-Swansea ace Sigurdsson – who cost Everton a whopping £45million () in the summer of 2017 – dropped deeper into midfield, but of late has been used as a 10.

Clearly, Sigurdsson is better between the lines. His creation, vision but also careful execution of the chip through to Bernard to score the winner is sublime. Indeed, it is something Tottenham are missing. A wonderful player, and getting better with age.
