Everton now think James Garner could return from injury earlier than they initially expected, .
Garner is yet to start a game in the Premier League under Frank Lampard after making the switch from Manchester United over the summer.
The 21-year-old impressed for Nottingham Forest in the Championship last season as he helped Steve Cooper’s men back into England’s top flight.
The Toffees midfielder didn’t feature under Lampard until October when he made his debut for United at Goodison Park.
He did get a run of games from the bench before the World Cup break but he suffered another setback as he missed out Everton’s mid-season tour of Australia with a back injury. But it seems Everton are now hopeful that he will return to action ahead of schedule.
Garner could return from injury earlier
, a fan asked Boyland about Garner’s situation at the club following his absence from the tour of Australia.
“Garner missed some pre-season training while he waited for his move from Manchester United to go through and was playing catch-up in the early part of this season,” Boyland responded.
“He missed the tour of Australia with a back problem and the worst-case scenario was thought to be an absence of two months from when he sustained the injury.
“He returned to Finch Farm last week, like his team-mates, to do some rehab work and Everton are hopeful he could be back sooner than the above timeline if all goes to plan.
“Manager Frank Lampard sees Garner as someone who can contribute now, but who will also be a big part of Everton’s future. He’s potentially a key cog in moving towards a more expansive style, given his quality on the ball.”
It’s clear that Lampard has high hopes for Garner, despite the fact he seemed to be easing him into first-team action before the World Cup.
The former Forest man has been described as a ‘phenomenal’ talent but hasn’t had the best of luck since making the switch to Goodison Park.
Garner will be hoping that he does return ahead of schedule and he can begin to force his way into Lampard’s midfield.
The Englishman faces stiff competition for a place in the side, with Amadou Onana impressing since his arrival. Alex Iwobi has also benefited massively from his new role in the middle of the park.
But at 21, Garner clearly has a bright future ahead of him and will have to patiently wait for his opportunity to make an impact at Everton.
