Everton must cut their losses on Marcel Brands’ Fabian Delph gamble this winter
In the summer of 2019, Everton pulled off what many saw as something of a gamble by signing Fabian Delph from Manchester City.
the England international had been identified as a transfer target by director of football Marcel Brands as early as March that year and he soon got onto old friend Txiki Begiristain, his opposite number at City, regarding a potential deal.
In the end, Everton signed Delph for a fee in the region of £8.5 million,
It was a bargain considering Delph’s importance to the dressing room at Manchester City, versatility, and leadership qualities. Some even wondered if Delph could be a future Everton captain and follow the lead of Gareth Barry, who had an important impact at Goodison late in his own career.
That has not proved to be the case. The gamble was always on Delph’s fitness, given his years of injury trouble. Unfortunately for Everton, nothing has changed on Merseyside.
Now,, the likes of Burnley are considering a January move for Delph who is again out injured, currently nursing a hamstring problem.
Delph was a dice worth rolling for Everton. If he stayed fit he could have become a vital member of the first-team picture. However, he has not and the result is a gamble that has failed to return winnings.
Everton should cut their losses and let Delph go this winter.
