Everton missed a trick not signing Gary Cahill this summer
One obvious mistake that Everton made this summer was failing to bring in another central defender.
The Toffees appeared to gamble on getting their hands on Kurt Zouma again for another season, whilst they saw Mason Holgate’s return from a loan spell at West Brom as adequate cover for Phil Jagielka’s departure.
Everton ended up scrambling with the likes of Chris Smalling, David Luiz, Fikayo Tomori and Marcos Rojo all rumoured as potential recruits that failed to arrive.
Now, with Michael Keane out of form for both club and country, Everton have a lack of cover in a key position.
What is equally frustrating is that in Everton’s failed attempts to sign one Chelsea player, they seemingly never considered going for another.
Gary Cahill’s contract expired at Stamford Bridge this summer and despite his record of three major European club trophies, two Premier League titles and 61 caps for England the Toffees, along with several other clubs, ignored his availability.
The 33-year-old subsequently signed with Crystal Palace and the results have been impressive.
Cahill has been fantastic in the Eagles’ brilliant start to the new season and question marks over his age and fitness can be firmly quashed.
He is tremendous shape, playing at a high level and Everton missed a trick not going for him when it became clear Zouma was not going to be an option.
