Everton midfielder Andre Gomes admits he’s still working on his fitness

Everton’s Andre Gomes has admitted that he’s still trying to improve physically, explaining that his fitness has been an issue ever since returning from the ankle injury he sustained back in November 2019.

The Portuguese midfielder was back playing football regular first-team football post-lockdown, but is still striving to show the kind of form he did after his initial from Barcelona.

Gomes now has increased competition in the centre of the park this season and that has seen him make just five appearances so far.

The 27-year-old has been an unused substitute in three of the last four Premier League matches, with the likes of Allan, Abdoulaye Doucoure and Gylfi Sigurdsson above him in the pecking order at present.

Gomes has confessed that his form isn’t quite at the level he wants it to be and pins a lot of that down to his fitness:

“The truth is, I am still trying to find my best feeling, to get fit, to get ready to be 100 per cent for all the game,”

“Now, I am working to get as fit as I can and trying to feel better, trying to be confident when we are playing. But, more than anything else, I am trying to improve physically.”

TBR’s View:

Everton fans have seen first-hand in the past what a talent Gomes is, which is why they should be patient with him and hope that he can rediscover a purple patch of form in the near future.

He is a creative midfielder that can add some extra guile alongside some of their powerhouses and he’s got to try work his way back into the good books of Italian manager Carlo Ancelotti.

Despite his struggles of late, Gomes has indicated that he’s desperately trying to work back to his best and knows he’s got to get through plenty of hard yards in Ancelotti’s XI.
