Joleon Lescott holds no regrets over leaving Everton for Manchester City
Former Everton defender Joleon Lescott has told that he has no regrets over leaving Goodison Park.
The defender departed for Manchester City in 2009, signing for £22 million,
Lescott made 113 appearances for the Toffees and claims it was still a hard decision to leave the Toffees.
: “The decision was a lot harder than what was made out.
“I made the decision for my footballing career and the claims that it was all about money were just speculation. I had to burden that for a while but I don’t regret the move.
“At the age I was at, Manchester City matched my ambition.
The former central defender said that the ordeal of trying to ensure a move was frustrating.
Everton boss David Moyes refused to sanction a move for some time and the situation became messy.
“We fell out, it was uncomfortable. I wasn’t made to train with the team.
“That was hard because I’m not disruptive, I would never disrupt sessions or disrespect what Moyes was trying to do.
“It was ugly and it was hard to take that I was being made out as a scapegoat.”
TBR Verdict
Lescott’s departure from Everton to Manchester City was made out to be for financial incentives by the club’s supporters.
It’s clear from this interview that it perhaps wasn’t as clean cut as that.
Lescott won trophies at City and he wouldn’t have done that at Goodison Park.
It was clearly sore for the Toffees faithful at the time given the quality which the defender possessed.
It seems clear that Lescott remained professional and deep down probably holds some fond memories of his time on Merseyside.
