Everton loanee Kieran Dowell is taking step backwards

Kieran Dowell is an exciting prospects that has come through the academy ranks at Everton, but he’s currently enduring a poor loan spell that is concerning for his development.

The 21-year-old has risen through the academy at the Merseyside club and many feel that he could have a bright future in the top-flight.

But he’s currently suffering in the Championship with Derby County and the Toffees should be concerned by his spell at Pride Park.

The attacking midfielder played in the opening six games of the league season, but was unable to make a serious impression in Phillip Cocu’s team and has fallen out of favour since.

Dowell has not played a first-team minute since the Brentford clash on 31 August and been an unused substitute in the last five consecutive league matches.

The English playmaker featured for Derby’s Under-23s side on Monday night and it’s a big indication of how far he has fallen.

Everton desperately need Dowell to try get back on track at Derby, or perhaps look at sending him on loan elsewhere.

He scored 10 goals in 43 games for Nottingham Forest during a loan in the 2017/18 campaign, while last season he helped Sheffield United earn promotion from the Championship.

Dowell has proven in the past he can be a creative force and effective in the number 10 role, but right now his confidence must be at an all-time low and he looks miles off the first-team at Goodison Park.
