Everton loan man could take over 24-year-old’s mantle next season

Everton will reportedly prioritise keeping Kurt Zouma beyond his loan spell this summer.

The Frenchman has been in decent form for the Toffees, especially in the second half of the season.

Zouma has established himself as a mainstay next to Michael Keane at the back for Everton, and taken full advantage of the opportunities brought about by Yerry Mina’s injury problems.

He is a popular figure at the club in the eyes of both his teammates and the fans, and of course Marco Silva who continues to trust him.

The Portuguese tactician said of Zouma and fellow loanee Andre Gomes last month, : “We are happy with them, this is the truth. It’s up to us to do what we can to try to keep them.

“It’s up to the clubs also, it’s not just in our hands. It’s in the player’s minds also and they have to decide together with their own clubs. In the right moment we will do something.”

Matters may be complicated over Zouma with Chelsea’s transfer ban currently still in place, so could Everton call on a forgotten man next season if things go pear-shaped?

TBR’s view

Mason Holgate was sent out on loan in January to Championship side West Bromwich Albion after falling down the pecking order at Goodison Park.

He has been a regular for the Baggies, making 17 league appearances.

The versatile 22-year-old has been playing at right-back, but last season Holgate showed his quality as a centre-half.

If Chelsea’s transfer ban remains in place, it may see them want to keep hold of Zouma, in which case Everton must reintegrate Holgate – a £2 million signing from Barnsley in 2015 () – who can take over the colossus’ mantle.
