Report: ‘Extraordinary’ Everton target open to Goodison transfer

Roma defender Chris Smalling is open to joining Everton in the summer transfer window, according to .

The Toffees are assessing an offer to bring Smalling back to the Premier League as he faces uncertainty in Italy. He endured his worst campaign at the Stadio Olimpico to date last term and could now be replaced.

Jose Mourinho is eager to add a new name at centre-half to begin his tenure at the Serie A side. But the Giallorossi must first clear a space in their current ranks, and it is likely that Smalling will be the one who is shown the door.

Smalling struggled with fitness issues throughout 2020/21 that have caused doubt in the Roma hierarchy over his long-term suitability. The 31-year-old only started league appearances last season, while missing 19 fixtures.

Roma are now keen to recoup some of the £13.5million rising to £18m () they paid Manchester United last September. And they see Everton as their best bet over likely interest from Turkey, with a bid under consideration on Merseyside.

Smalling would be open to moving to Goodison Park in the summer transfer widow if the chance arises. But he is not currently pushing for a transfer away from Roma and will only leave for an enticing offer.

Everton’s interest in Smalling has been reiterated by , as well, after approaching Roma for more information. Mourinho is eying a replacement for the England international as he prefers a defender with alternate characteristics.

TBR’s view: Everton should steer clear of Smalling

Everton can sign a defender with vast Premier League and international experience in Smalling. But the Toffees should steer clear of a transfer for the Roma centre-back as his injury record is very worrisome.

Smalling enjoyed his longest stretch in the Giallorossi backline last season between December 13 and January 31 when he made . But knee and bicep femoris muscle injuries bookended that run.

Sprains and further knee or muscular problems ultimately restricted him to 21 games in all competitions. And Smalling was on the receiving end of a 6-2 thrashing by Manchester United in the Europa League semi-finals, as well.

It was a campaign far from the heights of his first year in Italy while on loan. Former Roma boss Paulo Fonseca was full of praise toward the end of the 2019/20 season, stating via : “He’s an extraordinary guy, very intelligent.

“He has characteristics that I really appreciate in the centre. He’s fast, nearly unbeatable in one-on-ones. He has a great ability to read the play and anticipate. He was very important for this club.”

Smalling may still be able to turn in performances at the standard Fonseca admired if Everton were to sign him. But the injuries he endured last season should prove too strong to pursue a transfer.
