Everton: German forward joins; Koeman wants top-six battle; Robles fighting for his place

Everton have announced the signing of young German forward Anton Donkor on loan from Wolfsburg this morning, in a deal that will see him at Goodison Park until the end of the season.

about his move, the 19-year-old said:

“I’m very happy and grateful to be here. I know this is a great club and I like the way they play.

“I’m looking forward to challenging myself in English football. The facilities are great and I’m looking forward to getting started here.

“I think I can learn from the good young players that are already here and hopefully we can be successful together.”

Donkor will join up with Everton’s Under-23 squad for the remainder of the season, with Koeman looking to include the youngster in his first-team as his loan spell goes on.

The 19-year-old has spent this season playing for Wolfsburg’s Under-23 side in the fourth tier of German football, making twelve appearances.

After Everton’s rich vein of recent form since December, which has seen them beat both Arsenal and Manchester City at Goodison Park, manager Ronald Koeman has outlined his top-six ambitions this week.

After closing the gap to Manchester United to just five points after the Toffees clinched a last-gasp victory over Crystal Palace last weekend, Koeman has sent out a warning to those sides above him.

, the Dutchman said:

“We know it is difficult to beat the big ones in the Premier League. But we are in a good way and we would like to keep it that way and keep the momentum.”

Everton are in exceptional Premier League form at the moment, currently on a five-match unbeaten run, and the January signings of Morgan Schneiderlin and Ademola Lookman have kept hopes high at Goodison Park of a top-six finish.

Everton have a weekend off after being knocked out of the FA Cup third-round by Leicester City before they face a trip to Stoke for their first league match in February.

One key-man during this impressive Premier League revival has come in the unlikely shape of Joel Robles, Koeman’s second-choice goalkeeper at Goodison Park.

Robles, who has only recently had a run of matches after the unfortunate injury to Maarten Stekelenburg during Everton’s derby loss to Liverpool, has been in fine form since then; over seven league appearances, he’s kept five clean sheets – including three in his last three matches.

The more stats to show how much of an impression Robles has had since his return to the side, showing that Robles has the highest percentage of saves of any Premier League goalkeeper this season after saving 85% of shots faced.

He’s also already kept more clean sheets than Manchester City’s Claudio Bravo despite playing twelve fewer league matches and has helped the Toffees in their top-six hunt.

With Stekelenburg returning to full fitness, it will be interesting to see what Koeman does; does he stick with an in-form Robles, or does he twist for his favoured number one?

If current form plays a factor – as it certainly should – it’s hard to see Robles losing his spot.
