Everton fans rave about midfielder Andre Gomes, after late winner against Arsenal

Everton snatched a brilliant win against Arsenal on Monday evening as Demarai Gray scored an injury-time winner – and Everton fans have applauded midfielder Andre Gomes for his cameo role.

The Toffees came into the match in a dismal run of form, eight games without a win and six of those have culminated in defeats. It looked as though it was going to end in another loss on Monday night.

Martin Odegaard opened the scoring, his second in two games having netted against Manchester United at Old Trafford. Reaching the byline, Kieran Tierney crossed perfectly for the onrushing Odegaard.

Richarlison had a goal disallowed just before the hour mark, with VAR narrowly ruling the Brazilian was offside. But he eventually got his name on the score sheet on 80 minutes, equalising with aplomb.

Then, it was all down to a moment of magic from Gray. Receiving a pass from Portugal international Gomes, the winger nabbed his fifth goal of the season with a wonderful effort from the edge of the area.

What are Everton fans saying about Gomes, after the win over Arsenal?

Everton so badly needed the win. Supporters had become disgruntled, especially due to Rafa Benitez’s past Liverpool links. There will have been some fans that left Goodison Park early, on Monday night.

But Gray’s goal was not only perfect for Everton, but another reason why Benitez deserves trust – given it was his signing. Another reason why Benitez deserves praise, is introducing Gomes on 66 minutes.

Replacing Andros Townsend, the ex-Barcelona midfielder changed the game for the Toffees – dictating the play with his tempo and passing. Everton fans raved about their midfield star on Twitter.
