‘Error’… Defender Tottenham have loaned out publicly criticised by his manager

Millwall manager Joe Edwards has given his verdict on the performance of Tottenham Hotspur-owned Japhet Tanganga against Preston North End.

Edwards was not happy at all with Tanganga, who joined Millwall on loan from Tottenham in the January transfer window.

So, what has Joe Edwards said about Japhet Tanganga? Let’s take a look.

Criticism of Tottenham Hotspur-owned Japhet Tanganga

Well, Millwall took on Preston North End at The Den in the Championship on Saturday afternoon.

The match ended in a. The home side went ahead after just five minutes when Zian Flemming headed home George Honeyman’s cross.

Preston restored parity in the 33rd minute. Brad Potts scored the goal.

While analysing the goal, Millwall manager Joe Edwards criticised Japhet Tanganga, who joined the club from Tottenham Hotspur in the January transfer window and is unlikely to have a long-term future at the Premier League club.

The Millwall manager noted that it was the 24-year-old defender’s misplaced pass that cost them the goal.

Tanganga, who had a loan spell at Augsburg earlier this season, started on the right in a three-man defence as part of a 3-4-2-1 formation against Preston.

Edwards told about Tanganga: “It’s a poor goal across the backline. It starts with Japh. He had loads of the ball and moments where he was composed. You can see the quality he possesses and the level he has played at.

“But, for sure, the pass is an error. But when Japh has that ball, as our right-sided centre-back, between Wes and Coops we should have been opening up more – they shouldn’t have been so close together.

“Joe is opening out to open the pitch up, which is easy to analyse now and say: ‘Joe Bryan is miles away’. But when we were playing well against Leicester and Middlesbrough that is where our wing-backs were. Joe is getting ready to go, thinking we are getting ready to build an attack.

“When Japh makes that error it means Wes and Coops get caught too close together. We have a massive gap between Coops and Joe. It is those details after the event that we can all sit and analyse it – when it happens that quickly you can get punished.”

My View: Japhet Tanganga needs to step up his game

In my opinion, Japhet Tanganga has to do better at Millwall than he did at Augsburg and has to step up his game.

During his loan spell at Augsburg, the Tottenham Hotspur-owned defender failed to make a single appearance.

He has now made one start and one substitute appearance in the Championship for Millwall.

I do not think that Tanganga has a long-term future at Tottenham. After all, why would Spurs head coach Ange Postecoglou send him out on loan twice if he thought that the 24-year-old would be an asset for his team?

But, if Tanganga did well during his loan spell at Millwall, then he could attract interest from top clubs in the Championship and lower-level Premier League teams in the summer of 2024.
