Eros Grezda featured for Rangers’ Development squad in yesterday’s clash with Hibernian. Grezda started the game and played 70 minutes but it was far from successful.
While Grezda should have used this game to prove a point, he was withdrawn with the Gers trailing 2-0. Without him on the pitch, Rangers staged a late comeback and drew 2-2. Grezda’s latest performance will do little to change Steven Gerrard’s opinion.
Grezda continues on downward spiral
Grezda joined from Osijek last summer and Rangers fans were excited about this new player. He was a bit of an unknown quantity but reports suggested he was a lively winger with an eye for goal.
But Rangers have not seen the best of the Albania international. In just over a year at Ibrox, Grezda has managed 17 appearances for Rangers, scoring twice and providing one assist in total.
His last appearance was an 11-minute cameo back in April. At the moment, he is showing no signs of halting his downward slide. With this latest performance for the reserves, Grezda finds himself battling for his future.
First-team path blocked
Grezda faces the mountainous task of overtaking some talented wingers at Rangers. Ryan Kent rejoined in the summer and he will probably slot straight into the starting line-up for Rangers.
Then, Grezda finds himself below Sheyi Ojo, Scott Arfield, Jordan Jones and Brandon Barker on the wings. And then, there is the returning Jamie Murphy. Moreover, Gerrard might use Greg Docherty or Greg Stewart in the wide areas ahead of Grezda, despite that not being their best position.
There are potentially eight players standing between Grezda and a first-team return. Until he starts performing for the reserves, he will remain as ninth-choice in this department.
January exit on the cards?
Unless his form picks up drastically before January, it could be curtains for Grezda’s Rangers career. The 24-year-old needs to leave for the sake of his career and Rangers should cut their losses.
Grezda failed to impress once again in yesterday’s game and that just seems to be confirming what Gerrard already knew; that the Albanian winger has no future in Glasgow.
