Rangers midfielder Steven Davis is ‘tactically brilliant’ and a ‘selfless’, according to Eric Black.
The playmaker has started to show some good form for the Light Blues recently after a sluggish start to his loan stint at Ibrox.
Davis joined the club in January from Southampton and had been tipped to help Rangers make a title charge along with striker Jermain Defoe.
At first he struggled for minutes, but now the 34-year-old is showing his class for Steven Gerrard’s side.
Former Saints assistant Black has been thoroughly impressed by Davis, and believes the club would be foolish not to keep him beyond the summer despite his advancing years.
He said, : “We played him at Southampton in a three at times. He is not going to get up to people and take the ball away from them. He is physically not big enough, quick enough or strong enough to be that aggressive kind of player.
“But tactically, he is absolutely brilliant. And he is selfless with it as well. He positions himself in such a way that it doesn’t become a physical challenge but the opposition player still can’t pass the ball forward.”
TBR’s view
Davis is clearly a fine player and probably worth Rangers trying to keep.
Certainly Black’s glowing report has to count for something given how closely he worked with him down at Southampton. He also said that the player is ‘one of the best professionals I’ve ever worked with’.
His experience could potentially come in very handy in 2019/2020, with Rangers dead set on pushing Celtic for the Premiership title.
