Enzo Maresca couldn’t even look at Enzo Fernandez after what he did in 2-0 Chelsea loss, turned away disgusted

Chelsea delivered a disappointing performance against Newcastle on Wednesday as Enzo Maresca watched his side crash out of the Carabao Cup.

The Italian witnessed his Chelsea team throw away the chance to play Brentford in the quarter-final of the Carabao Cup within three minutes, as a strike from Alexander Isak in the 23rd minute was quickly followed by an Axel Disasi own goal in the 26th minute.

A number of fringe players were given an opportunity to start, such as Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall, Filip Jorgensen and Joao Felix, although very few in blue impressed on Tyneside.

Enzo Fernandez was also handed a start by Enzo Maresca after being benched in the last two Premier League outings against Liverpool and Newcastle – although the Argentine perhaps should not expect to keep his place.

Enzo Fernandez leaves Enzo Maresca disappointed with careless pass

It was a sloppy performance from Chelsea, who struggled to play out from the back on several occasions – Isak was even gifted his opener after a careless ball from Benoit Badiashile into Renato Veiga.

That was a recurring trend on Wednesday night, as Fernandez – who Joe Cole likes – also handed Newcastle another chance to launch an attack with a strange pass, which he fired straight into Sandro Tonali and consequently put Chelsea on the back foot.

Maresca appeared to be disgusted by the Argentina international’s wastefulness, as Sky Sports cameras showed the 44-year-old turning away from the pitch and heading back to the bench, clearly frustrated by the South American.

Chelsea No.8 did little to impress Enzo Maresca

With Premier League clashes against Manchester United and Arsenal on the horizon, we would expect Maresca to put Fernandez – who John Obi Mikel thinks can become world class – back on the bench after his display against Newcastle.

As SofaScore shows, the Chelsea No.8 lost possession on 23 occasions, while only one of his 106 passes went down as a key pass on a night where he was far from effective with his use of the ball.

It was hardly a disaster-class from Fernandez, but he did little to show Maresca that he deserves to displace either Moises Caicedo or Romeo Lavia when Premier League action gets back underway.
