English national media deliver verdicts on Arsenal star Bukayo Saka’s display in the Euro 2024 final

Earning his 40th cap for England at Euro 2024, Arsenal forward Bukayo Saka started all seven of his country’s games in Germany.

Saka was a beacon of hope for Gareth Southgate at the tournament, who owes the 22-year-old for rescuing England in their quarter-final against Switzerland.

Saka’s trademark strike, cutting in from the left, was one of the tournament highlights for England, who scored a similarly good goal in the final via Chelsea’s Cole Palmer.

And although Jude Bellingham will be credited with the assist, it was Saka’s clever work down the right which crafted the chance, which was then expertly finished.

On the whole, Saka enjoyed a strong tournament in Germany, even if his disappointment was so clear to see once England’s tournament ended on Sunday evening.

That being said, English media outlets have now been sharing their rating of Saka’s performance vs Spain, which was unfortunately not enough to inspire a win on this occasion.

Arsenal star Bukayo Saka handed 6/10 after fading following ‘bright start’

shared their thoughts on Saka’s display, saying he ‘came alive’ when playing his part in England’s goal.

They wrote: “Came alive during the outstanding counter-attack which led to the equaliser, beating Cucurella and squared to Bellingham. But that moment aside, he was quiet, 6/10.”

The shared similar sentiments, saying Saka was ultimately just starved of the ball.

“Started brightly against Cucurella but England were so starved of possession that they couldn’t get him on the ball enough, 6/10.”

Saka ‘terrified’ Cucurella and the Spanish defence

Of the ratings included, only handed Saka a 7/10, saying he ‘terrified’ the Spanish defence.

They shared: “His speed belatedly terrified Spain and his cross got England back in the game. Good early on too.”

And then finally, shared their more encompassing verdict, saying Saka was the only player who was regularly exciting the England fans in Berlin.

Sky wrote: “England’s joy offensively came down Saka’s side in tandem with Walker.

“Always capable of making things happen and the one player who has regularly got fans off their seats in Germany.

“Others retreated into their shell and wilted under the weight of expectation and while Saka kept asking questions, this was largely a quiet night, 6/10.”

There’s certainly no suggestion that the Arsenal star let England down in any way throughout the tournament, a player who deserves a long rest after a season of excellent performances which ultimately led to disappointment across the board.
