One to watch: England right to consider future for Derby’s Mason Mount
Mason Mount is yet to miss a game this season, playing all of Derby County’s seven league and cup games. Add this to the almost 3,000 minutes of senior football the 19-year-old played at Vitesse Arnhem last season in the Eredivisie, and he is starting to put together a nice little resume.
It is something that has not gone unnoticed by Gareth Southgate. The England manager spoke glowingly of Mount in his press conference announcing the upcoming England squad ahead of the inaugural UEFA Nations League.
The Chelsea loanee has not featured for England to date but has earned his first under 21s call-up for the upcoming international break after scoring seven goals in 16 appearances for his country at under 19s level.
“He had a year in Holland which went really well and he is now in his second year of competitive football at a good level. He obviously trained with us [senior team] in the summer. He is a player we really like and because of those first-team experiences he is going to progress faster than others who maybe aren’t getting those experiences. He is also of the mentality we like – he’s a super kid. He is one that has not been mentioned as much as others who have not got to his level yet.”
It is no surprise that Southgate is talking about him. Mount has already scored four goals and added one assist in seven appearances this season from midfield and has been the crux of many of the good things Derby do going forward.
His tally of goals places him first amongst Derby players in all competitions, while he also leads his team-mates with most chances created in the league this season, with 13. But it is the consistent playing time that is most important.
The England manager has stated that he will only call up people playing regularly for their clubs – Mount is undoubtedly checking that box.
