Emre Can makes bold claim about Manchester City following their win last night
Manchester City are “perhaps the best team in the world”, according to Emre Can.
The Germany international made the claim following the Citizens’ Champions League quarter-final victory over his Borussia Dortmund side.
Pep Guardiola’s charges were in action at the Signal Iduna Park on Wednesday night, holding a 2-1 lead from their game at the Etihad Stadium.
City were left chasing the game, however, after Jude Bellingham opened the scoring for the hosts on the quarter-hour mark.
The visitors soon upped the gears and went on the the attack, weighing in with numerous good chances, though they still trailed at the break.
City eventually regained their lead in the tie shortly before the hour mark as Can was penalised for a handball in the box and Riyad Mahrez firing home.
Phil Foden made sure of his side’s progress in the 75th minute with a fierce low effort from outside the box which came off the post en route to the back of the net.
“All in all our performance was okay, but that doesn’t bring us much in the end,” Can told the Dortmund after the game.
“The match clearly changed after it went to 1-1. I touched the ball with my head first of all and then it landed on my arm. I believe the rules stipulate that’s not a handball. It’s bitter and it hurts.
“Nonetheless, we can be proud of ourselves. We were playing against perhaps the best team in the world, and we saw we can compete.
“That said, it is painful to go out here because we had the chances to go through.”
City are through to the semi-finals of the competition for the second time in their history and will face Paris Saint-Germain, who eliminated holders Bayern Munich in the last eight.
