Emile Heskey believes the ‘writing is on the wall’ for one Liverpool player

Emile Heskey has told Sky Sports News (Thursday, 10.41am) that he believes the “writing is on the wall” for Liverpool star Xherdan Shaqiri, despite the player remaining at Liverpool beyond the end of the transfer window.

Shaqiri, 28, has endured a difficult 12 months at Liverpool. The Swiss star began life at Liverpool in excellent form, having a hand in 11 goals during 30 appearances – including a crucial assist in the Champions League comeback against Barcelona.

However, injury riddled Shaqiri’s progress last season. He managed just 11 appearances for Liverpool, scoring just one goal but this season, he played against Lincoln in a 7-2 win – curling an excellent effort into the back of the net.

He was due to play in the Carabao Cup match against Arsenal but Jurgen Klopp stated after the match that he was told to take him out of the side with a potential move on the cards. Heskey believes the £13million signing will leave.

“The writing is on the wall for Shaqiri,” Heskey said. “Klopp said he doesn’t see him there after the window, and he is still there. Curtis Jones has done a phenomenal job, and we have to see more. Getting players out and players in is what Liverpool need.”

TBR’s view – Where would be best for Shaqiri?

Realistically, Liverpool are not going to allow Shaqiri to stay in England in case the Swiss star comes back to haunt the Reds – given that he is still a top-quality player, just lacking in match sharpness.

Shaqiri needs game time and to join a side where he will be first choice. Shaqiri has experience of the Bundesliga, with Bayern Munich, and a return to Germany could be perfect. Certainly, he still has plenty of years left ahead of him.
