Emi Martinez compares Arsenal youngster to Brazilian Ronaldo after last night’s performance
Gabriel Martinelli started for Arsenal against Leeds United last night and it looks like Emi Martinez was really impressed with the attacker, so much so, that he has compared him to Brazilian icon Ronaldo.
The 20-year-old spends most of his time these days on the bench, much to the anger of Arsenal supporters. Many fans feel Mikel Arteta doesn’t quite believe in him, but the Gunners boss handed him his opportunity last night.
Martinelli started on the left flank and looked lively. He was nowhere near his best, but he got on the ball consistently and troubled young Cody Drameh of Leeds United on multiple occasions.
The little Brazilian would’ve liked to have more of an impact last night, but he should be satisfied with a full 90 minutes under his belt. He’ll be hoping that Arteta saw something in him against Leeds that will force the Arsenal boss to give him more game time in the coming weeks.
Emi Martinez likens Gabriel Martinelli to Brazilian Ronaldo
Following Arsenal’s win over Marcelo Bielsa’s side in the Carabao Cup last night, Martinelli took to to have his say on the victory.
“Love playing, love winning,” he captioned his post, and ex-Gunner Martinez, who didn’t have a happy return to the Emirates last week, responded to the Brazilian using one word.
‘Fenómeno,’ he said, possibly comparing Martinelli to one of Brazil and world football’s greatest ever players, Ronaldo Nazario, popularly known as ‘O Fenómeno.’
Ronaldinho said the same
Martinez isn’t the first one to compare Martinelli to the great Ronaldo. The legendary Brazilian’s ex-teammate, Ronaldinho, had something similar to say about the Arsenal man back in January last year.
Ronaldinho said about Martinelli, as per : “We as Brazilians are very excited about him and his future. It is one thing to have the talent, but another at the age of 18 to have the confidence.
“He reminds me of Ronaldo. His first season in Europe, he scored 30 goals and people were thinking: ‘who is this 18-year-old Brazilian kid?’ He wanted the ball, he would run at players, there was no fear no matter what players or team he was playing against—and I see that similar attitude in Martinelli.
“He just wants to be on the ball and score goals. Ronaldo went on to be the best player in the world, and that can also be the aim of Martinelli.”
