Edinson Cavani, the Uraguyan striker is approaching the end of his potentially title-winning debut season with French giants Paris Saint-Germain. They head into tonight’s fixture against Rennes knowing a win would secure their second successive title. However, Cavani also has the world cup on his mind, as well as any possible transfer activity heading his way.
In recent weeks, there has been vast speculation concerning a move to England for the ex-Napoli man. Reports have said that Manchester United and Chelsea are very interested, and Roman Abramovich ready to end the hunt for Diego Costa for Cavani. PSG will not sell their new man cheaply however, with PSG reportedly setting a price tag of £60,000,000. But is he worth it?
Cavani can play anywhere in the front line, whether it be on the right, left or his favoured position of an out and out striker. Since his move to France, he has played more on the right, due to Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s wonder season. When playing on the right, Cavani has scored 8 goals in 21 games. However, in his 9 appearances leading the line, he has scored 7- an impressive difference. He caught the eye of the world when playing up top for Italian side Napoli, where he scored 26 goals in his first season, 23 the next and 29 in his final season for them. This season, playing in a variety of roles for PSG, he has scored just 16.
Edinson Cavani is known for his devastating finishing, whether it be on the floor or in the air, he can finish It. The 6 ft striker is very strong, can hold the ball up and link play. His composure was defined by his goal against FC Bastia, where he cut inside from the left, dummied one player, rolled the ball past the keeper and slotted the ball into an empty net from a tight angle. His composure and skilfulness has meant that he has settled in well with the PSG fans, but has he settled in himself?
Reports that Cavani is unsettled are believable, he hasn’t been given the role he would have liked, and has not been promised this will be resolved next season. Therefore, a move to United, in my eyes, would be silly for him. With even more competition for places at Old Trafford, and with champions league football not being offered, Manchester United would be far from the preferred destination. Whereas Chelsea will maybe be looking to offload Fernando Torres, which leaves a space for a striker that scores naturally. The Blues also have money to spend. The question for Chelsea now is if they would prefer him or Diego Costa.
