Eddie Howe says £13m Newcastle player has been ‘much better’ than he had ever hoped for

Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe has rallied round in support of Dan Burn following criticism of the player over the past week.

The Magpies boss, speaking at his Friday press conference – as per – said he feels that Burn has been “huge” for his boyhood club.

Howe named Burn at left-back in the Newcastle starting XI in last week’s Premier League meeting with Luton Town.

The 31-year-old endured a difficult afternoon against the Hatters and the pace of Chiedozie Ogbene in a dramatic encounter at St James’ Park.

Burn conceded a penalty that Carlton Morris converted to make it 3-2 on 59 minutes and was then out of position when Elijah Adebayo put the Hatters 4-2 up shortly after.

Some Newcastle supporters were heard “Tino, Tino” in hope that Howe would replace Burn with the summer signing.

The Magpies manager made the change in the 64th minute as Newcastle went on to secure a 4-4 draw thanks to goals from Kieran Trippier and Harvey Barnes.

Newcastle next face a trip to Nottingham Forest in a 5:30pm kickoff and Howe must decide whether to opt for Burn or Livramento at left-back.

Dan Burn ‘pivotal’ for Newcastle United

The Magpies manager, speaking at his pre-match presser, stressed that the man has been “pivotal” for Newcastle and that he’s been even better than he initially envisaged.

“I understand as it’s football and everyone has an opinion, Dan has been such a big player for us in many ways,” said the Newcastle boss.

“He is pivotal to how we play without giving too many tactical things away. He was such a big miss, he’s such a huge leader, huge presence physically and in leadership. He’s been an incredible signing for me and much better than I had hopes.

“He helped galvanise the players and I can’t speak highly enough of him. He’s been a huge player for us. He’s never lost the love and enthusiasm for the club, he’s Newcastle through and through.”

There’s no doubt that Burn has been a great option for Newcastle, and obviously it’s always great when a boyhood fan of a club ends up playing – and doing well – for them.

However, the thing is, the 31-year-old is a centre-back by trade, and playing on the left, he’s been getting exposed, which means something needs to be changed.

Ideally, Burn should be Sven Botman’s back-up, with Livramento playing at left-back for the rest of the season, when Newcastle can move for someone who’s a left-back by trade.
