Newcastle may have been forced into making a transfer mistake by FFP this summer

Newcastle United still find themselves unbeaten in the Premier League despite not being at their best just yet under Eddie Howe.

The Magpies managed to get the better of Tottenham Hotspur last time out in the Premier League, though it wasn’t exactly deserved as the away side dominated the possession and shooting stats.

Good teams find a way to win even when they’re not playing well and that’s what Newcastle United have managed to do so far this season.

One thing that hasn’t helped Howe’s cause over the past week or so has been the club’s dealings on the transfer front, as Oliver Glasner revealed Marc Guehi wasn’t joining Newcastle on deadline day.

This has left Newcastle’s centre-back options looking rather low on quality with just Fabian Schar, Dan Burn, Jamaal Lascelles, Sven Botman and Lloyd Kelly at Howe’s disposal.

And, to make matters worse, one former Newcastle player has been on fire since leaving St James’ Park…

FFP really has cost Newcastle a £35m star

The Magpies waved goodbye to 11 players this summer.

Two of those departures stung more than the others as Elliot Anderson and Yankuba Minteh ended up joining Nottingham Forest and Brighton and Hove Albion respectively.

And, so far it looks like Eddie Howe will be even more sad that he had to wave goodbye to him.

The 21-year-old joined Forest for £35 million in the summer transfer window.

However, it wasn’t his fault that he was transferred and Howe can’t be blamed either as the club actually wanted to keep him. It was due to FFP reasons that the club were forced into selling him.

Anderson has started the last three games for Forest, assisting one goal and bossing things in the middle of midfield.

How good has Anderson been this season?

Anderson has been one of the shining lights for Forest already this season, sitting sixth in the ratings from .

However, it makes for interesting reading when you compare his stats to Bruno Guimaraes, with the former dominating in a number of areas.

The Scotsman already has an assist to his name, plus a better average per 90 minutes for progressive carries, shots, pass completion, key passes, shot creation, tackles won, blocks, touches, take-ons and aerial duels won.

Although, Joelinton has impressed with his creativity at times this season, Newcastle really miss having an Anderson type player to come off the bench and liven things up in the final third.

And, with him still only being 21 years old, that £35 million fee could turn into at least double in years to come if he continues to develop on the current trajectory.

The fact that Newcastle signed Odysseas Vlachodimos for £20 million in the deal makes the deal look even worse.
