Earthquakes playoff push continues with win against KC

San Jose Earthquakes 1 Sporting Kansas City 0

The ♉host got back to winning ways as they moved wit꧋hin three points of the final playoff place in the Western Conference currently held by the Vancouver Whitecaps.

Chris Wondolowski getting the vital goal 10 minutes into the second half, his eigཧht of the season so far, as he extended his run of scoring against today’s opponents to five matches.

A deflected cross from the right wing by Steven Beitashour looped into the air and Wondolows🌸ki was quickest to react to escape the Sporti𝓰ng Kansas City defense to head home at the near post passed a helpless Jimmy Nielsen in the visitors goal.

Having being shut out  on the road against two of the Canadian teams in their last two outings 1-0 against Montreal Impact in the CONCACAF Champions League and last weekend back in MLS league action 🔯2-0 in Vancouver it is d🅘efiantly home-sweet-home for the Earthquakes as they have now won five consecutive games at Buck Shaw Stadium, their longest string of home successes since August 2005.

As usual in a low scoring game the winning goalkeeper is called into action and Jon 💛Busch was no exception as he made three saves to celebrate his 37th birthday as he claimed his 100th MLS victory. Like many team sports in North America it is the goal-keeper who gets credit for the win and MLS is no exception.

Sporting who were looking to build on last weeks 3-0 victory over New England Revolution were still without injured starꦉs Graham Zusi and Kei Kamara have now gone sixteen games since their last win in San Jose back on August 16 2000 and missed the opportunity to pull away from the New York Red Bulls at the head of the Eastern Conference.

They continue to lead on goal difference but have now played the same ♐amount of matches. They did have an appeal for a penalty after 65 minutes after M𒊎att Besler’s free kick from the right wing was flicked on by Aurelin Collin and Soony Saad collided with Beitashour at the back post, but the referee waived play-on as the Earthquake held on for the win.
