Dummett’s return provides timely boost for Newcastle’s chances against Brighton
Paul Dummett will be fit to face Brighton this weekend and that is a timely boost for Newcastle United. The homegrown left-back is underrated by many and under Rafa Benitez, he has emerged as a key member of the first-team.
The Welsh international has been a mainstay of the team under numerous managers and that underlines how important he is to Newcastle.
Although Dummett doesn’t offer a lot in attack, he does provide balance and solidity to the back four. As a left-footed player, he offers a good option on that side.
In his absence, Newcastle fielded Kenedy and Javier Manquillo in the position. The former is too attack-minded to be trusted. Meanwhile, the latter is right-footed and that creates an imbalance.
At 27-years-old, Dummett is now regarded as one of the senior players and is considered a leader on the pitch by Benitez. Newcastle have kept two clean sheets this season and both came when the left-back was in the team.
During his time injured, Newcastle conceded five goals across two matches and squandered a two-goal lead against Manchester United. It is doubtful that they would have been as poor at the back if Dummett was on the pitch.
His return is crucial and provides a huge boost to Newcastle’s chances this weekend. If they can be solid at the back and keep Brighton out on Saturday, they have a great opportunity to secure three points.
