Dubravka is key to Newcastle’s survival hopes this season

Newcastle United had Martin Dubravka on Saturday as they gained an away point at Southampton. The goalkeeper has been a revelation since breaking in to the first team and underlines that there is still value to be found in the transfer market.

The 29-year-old was the busier of the two goalkeepers on Saturday, as the home side created more clear-cut chances. He made a number of good saves, including one to deny Jack Stephens on the stroke of half-time.

Dubravka is a huge presence in the Newcastle goal and he has already kept three clean sheets this season. Although the team are struggling at the bottom of the table, he has performed well.

It is important that a goalkeeper playing in a struggling team inspires confidence and Dubravka certainly does that. The shot-stopper has excellent control of his area and isn’t afraid to claim crosses, as he did on a number of occasions against Southampton.

There is a lot of work for Newcastle to do if they are to stay up. They aren’t going to score a lot of goals, but they are solid at the back and Dubravka is a huge reason for that.

Rafa Benitez knows it will be a difficult task to avoid relegation, but in Dubravka, he has a goalkeeper that can win points for his team.
