Forgotten Kieran Dowell deserves Everton chance in Carabao Cup

Kieran Dowell has been a forgotten man at Everton after returning from a successful loan spell at Nottingham Forest. The 20-year-old midfielder has made only one appearance and that came in the Carabao Cup.

His performances in the Championship last season underlined his quality. Dowell contributed nine goals and four assists during his stint at the City Ground.

During this period, he emerged as an important player for the England Under-21s.

Everton supporters were hoping that the attacking midfielder would breakthrough into the first team this season. There is still time for that, but his limited game-time to date will be a concern.

Marco Silva has a talented squad available to him after some eye-catching summer signings were made. However, it remains important that there is a route to the first-team for academy graduates.

Currently, Dowell is one of the most exciting young players at the club and he needs minutes to continue his development.

The cup competitions will provide the best chance for that. It is crucial that he is named in the starting eleven against Southampton to test himself against Premier League opposition.
